A synergistic composition useful for the preparation of dense neodynium stabilised ß-Si N -á-SiAION composite. The invention 3 4 relates to a synergistic composition useful for the preparation of dense neodynium stabilised ß-Si N -á-SiAION composite. The composition 3 4 consists of a synergistic mixture of Si N , Al O , AIN, SiO and Nd O . The 3 4 2 3 2 2 3 cost effective synergistic composition is useful for the preparation of dense neodynium stabilised ß-Si N -á-SiAION composite of the order of 3 4 >98% theoretical density, having high hardness and high fracture toughness. The dense ß-Si N -á-SiAION composite will be useful for low 3 4 temperature applications as wear parts like bearing and roller materials and particularly for grinding and milling operations like grinding balls.
