Abstract

Low-stress abrasion and corrosion tests of a porcelain-enamel-coated steel were conducted to ascertain its suitability in environments to be encountered in exhaust pipe applications. The average thickness of the coating was 350-mu-m and hardness was 50 RC (495 HB). The abraded and corroded surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Observations were in good agreement with test results. Excellent resistance of the enamel-coated steel to corrosion, accelerated weathering and abrasive wear indicates longer service life in applications such as exhaust pipes. Thus, enamel coatings on mild steel may make their use cost-effective.
