Abstract

Silicon Oxycarbide (SiOC) ceramics, derived from preceramic polymers, exhibit high thermal stability, and mechanical strength, making them promising for high-temperature applications. However, conventional ceramic processing limits their broader applicability due to shaping and design constraints, whereas Additive Manufacturing (AM) enables the fabrication of complex polymer-derived ceramic (PDC) components with enhanced design flexibility. Therefore, this study investigates the AM of a polysiloxane (PSO) precursor to produce SiOC ceramic composites using the lithography based ceramic manufacturing (LCM) technique. Tailor made cross-linkable preceramic polymer resins with 0 & 2.5 wt.% of SiCw were formulated with optimized rheological and curing properties. The LCM 3D printed green body structures and their pyrolysis behaviour were examined, and their defects were controlled. Furthermore, the physical properties of PDC components such as density, shrinkage and ceramic yield were evaluated under different processing conditions. For the monolith resin (PSO without SiCw), the ceramic yield and phase evolution of β-SiC, SiO2 and Cfree were examined after pyrolysis between 1100oC and 1500oC, using XRD, Raman and TEM analyses. At higher temperatures, both ceramic yield and hardness were increased due to formation of strong Si-C bonds compared to the composite resin (PSO with SiCw). However, structural defects such as shrinkage and indentation cone cracks were less with SiCw reinforced SiOC composites. For both PDC structures, nanocrystals were observed, and the crystallite size increased with the inclusion of reinforcements and with increasing temperature. Overall, the temperature and SiCw were found to be significant factors in producing the 3D printed polymer derived SiOC composites with improved properties.
