Abstract

The Zinc-Calcium-Aluminate glasses offer extended IR transparency and robust mechanical properties with improved glass-forming ability, but introduce defect-related colour centres where GeO2 addition resolves this without affecting IR transmission. Hence, the Er3+/Yb3+-Er3+-doped GeO2-tailored barium-zinc-calcium-aluminate glasses are thoroughly explored to realize the Visible-near infrared (NIR)-mid infrared (MIR) emissions for advanced photonic applications here. The Er-doped glasses exhibited broadband NIR and MIR emissions under 980 nm Xe-lamp excitation. Further to enhance the Er3+ emission, 1 mol% ytterbium oxide (Yb2O3) is introduced in the glass network as a sensitizer. The resonant energy transfer mechanism from Yb3+ to Er3+ is examined under 980 nm xenon lamp excitation, revealing almost ten and six times enhancement in NIR and MIR emission intensity, respectively. The Yb-Er co-doped glasses demonstrate NIR to visible upconversion emission with a dominant red component under 980 nm diode laser excitation. Colour tunable upconversion emission is realized with increased pump-power.
