Abstract

The phase and microstructure changes in two porcelain bodies as they evolve during firing were investigated. The refractoriness (pyrometric cone equivalent, PCE and refractoriness under load (RUL) were evaluated to demonstrate whether the present experimental porcelain bodies were refractory type. China clay, calcined alumina and feldspar were used as major raw materials in the present study. The two porcelain bodies developed results in high strength, adequate refractory properties and lower thermal expansion. The two porcelain compositions using clay, calcined alumina and feldspar attained full vitrification at 1400°C and had significantly high flexural strength. XRD and SEM studies indicate maximum crystallinity in both bodies.
