Abstract

Copper coating on steel before dipping in liquid zinc was found to be an effective route to improve galvanizing process and product quality. In the present study the effect of prior-copper coating on the iron-zinc intermetallic phase formation has been investigated using thermodynamic calculations and experimental techniques. Thermodynamic simulation of the iron-zinc-copper system has been performed using ThemoCalc. Nucleation parameters have been calculated following the classical theory of nucleation. The nucleation rate of zeta and delta phase in presence of copper has been calculated. The effect of prior-copper on the growth rate of zeta phase was also evaluated. Experimentally prepared galvanized coatings have been characterised by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Electron Probe Micro Analyser (EPMA), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy (GDOES). The calculations revealed marked decrease in nucleation and growth rate of zeta in presence of copper. As a consequence decrease in overall iron-zinc layer thickness and modified morphology of iron-zinc phases were observed in prior-copper coated galvanized samples. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V.
