Abstract

A procedure for estimation of viscosity from the optical basicity of glass melts is reported for the first time. SCIGLASS data for four silicate glass systems are chosen to develop the method proposed. The temperature corresponding to a particular viscosity value decreases exponentially with the increase of the optical basicity of a melt. Study of the dependence of viscosity on optical basicity leads to a viscosity-temperature relation which is a modified form of the well-known Vogel-Fulcher-Tamman equation [H. Vogel, Phys. Z. 22, 645 (1921); G. S. Fulcher, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 8, 339 (1925)]. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.
