Abstract

Fluorapatite based bioactive glass-ceramic material in the SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-P2O5-CaF2 system has been prepared and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis technique. The bioactivity behavior of the glass-ceramic specimen was investigated in vitro in simulated body fluid (SBF) solution. SEM-EDX was used to characterize the glass-ceramic surface after immersion in SBF solution and the corresponding SBF elemental compositional change was detected by chemical analysis. SEM-EDX and chemical analysis indicated reaction of the glass-ceramic specimen with the SBF solution and formation of apatite layer on its surface. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
