Abstract

The melting or decomposition of mullite has been a controversial problem since long ago. Several studies on the phase equilibrium of the Al2O3-SiO2 system were conducted to solve it. The experiments of the pioneer researchers are described in this paper, and the differences in the procedures and experimental set-up employed by them are carefully brought out to show that the origin of the controversy lies in this difference.
