Abstract

Details of the process for the preparation of high-silica glass preforms and drawing of optical fibres therefrom have been presented. The particulars of the modified chemical vapour deposition (MCVD) method used in preform making have been described; the fibre drawing technique has also been elaborated. Standard optical fibres in single continuous lengths exceeding 1.5 km have been drawn from several good quality preforms. Suitability of these fibres for short-haul applications has been evaluated after a thorough study of their optical properties.
