Abstract

Crack growth in an alumino-silicate castable refractory caused by repeated thermal quenching in water and the consequent change of mechanical behaviour of the material have been studied by acousto-ultrasonics. Thermal shock fatigue led to continuous decrease of stress wave energy transmission through the refractory body. Microscopic study revealed that the attenuation of stress wave was due to the development of interlinked multiple cracks on the surface of the refractory body. The compression loading-unloading test showed that in case of fired refractory body the loading-unloading curves were coincident and almost linear where as in case of quenched refractory body the loading curves became more and more non linear and the unloading curves got more and more deviated from the loading curves with the increase of thermal shock fatigue cycle. The preexisting cracks on the surface further propagated during compression loading and led to deviation of the unloading curve. Stress wave energy transmission was found to decay exponentially with increase of the area between the compression loading-unloading curves
