Abstract

Pure silica rods processed in two different ways have been used for drawing 125 mu diameter fibres at five different temperatures ranging from 1970-degrees-C to 215-degrees-C with controlled draw tension. Short gauge testing measurements were carried out on the fibres under ambient conditions to record the failure strengths in 20 - 30 samples from each fibre length. The data were analysed in terms of Weibull statistics and the optimum draw temperature and draw tension were determined for obtaining high strength fibres.
