Abstract
beta-Si3N4 has been synthesized from quartz using carbothermal reduction and nitridation with iron as a catalyst. At 1540(0)C beta-Si3N4 is the main product. At lower temperature SiC and Si2N2O are the associated phases. Mossbauer studies indicate that the formation of beta-Si3N4 is associated with the existence of a Fe-Si-N liquid. The composition of the liquid is constant at 8 at% Si irrespective of the temperature used for the process. Although Fe2O3 is detected in the reaction product, its amount is very small compared to the Fe-Si-N liquid. It has been suggested that formation of beta-Si3N4 takes place by precipitation from the Fe-Si-N liquid at 1540(0)C by following the overall reduction and nitridation reaction as follows: 3SiO(2) + 6C + 2N(2) = Si3N4 + 6CO At 1440(0)C, beta-Si3N4 is formed via SiC and Si2N2O.
