Abstract

Ultrasonic velocity measurement is an attractive technique for porosity characterisation of sintered ceramics and metals although, the use of a conventional linear relationship between the ultrasonic velocity and porosity often leads to contradictory results. Therefore, a mean value premise model is adapted where, each irregular pore shape of the microstructure is replaced by a spheroid having the same volume and surface area as those of the original pore, to calculate the ultrasonic velocity using the self consistent oblate spheroidal inclusion theory. The predicted trends bear excellent match with the experimental data on sintered SiC,ZTA ceramics and iron powder compacts.
