Abstract

Serpentine is a good source of natural raw material for the production of forsterite refractory. Forsterite is gaining ground due to its improved resistance to thermal shock and corrosive atmosphere. In the present investigation, forsterite sinter was developed from serpentine mined from Keonjhar of Orissa and Salem magnesite. Raw materials were taken with different compositions of serpentine and magnesite which after proper grinding and mixing were sintered at 1570 degrees C. The sintering characteristics were evaluated by bulk density, apparent porosity, x-ray analysis, hot modulus of rupture strength, RUL, thermal spalling and microstructural analysis. The role of additives, e.g., Cr2O3 and CrO3 were studied on the quality of sinters. The load bearing capacity was found to be significantly high with the introduction of additives.
