Abstract

Cation diffusion process in ion exchanged sodium aluminosilicate glass rods have been studied. Differential equations governing the diffusion process were solved by following a novel method. Experimental concentration data obtained from a number of Ag+-Na+ ion exchange studies with different salt bath compositions and durations agree well with the theoretical predictions except in one where the duration of exchange is comparable to the response time for concentration build up at the surface of the glass rods. Refractive index variation in these glasses whose cations have been exchanged in different salt baths were measured and a linear dependence is observed with the concentration of diffusing ion.
