Abstract

Rajpardi clay was progressively incorporated as replacement for Bikaner ball clay initially and then with Than plastic clay in combination with the conventional LT Insulator body composition. Standard composition consisted of 25% calcined quartz, 25% potash feldspar, 25% china clay, 15% Bikaner clay and 10% Than clay. The introduction of Rajpardi clay in the body mix in replacement of Bikaner ball and Than fire clays, showed significant changes in the unfired and fired properties of the body mixes. An incorporation of 25 mass% of Rajpardi clay in the composition increased the fired strength from 338 to 378 kg.cm−2 at the firing temperature of 1250°C, while decreased the water absorption and apparent porosity.
