Abstract

Absorption, excitation, emission spectra and lifetime measurements of cerium doped lithium-alumino-borate glass in the concentration range of 0.08% to 1.4% were investigated. The UV-absorption spectra at 290 nm in the concentration range of 0.08% to 0.09% reflects the 4f —> 5d transitions of the Ce3+ ion and the absorption spectra in the visible region at 380 nm obtained in the concentration range of 1.0% to 1.4% is predicted to be due to a higher coordination of Ce4+ stares in terms of oxygen. The emission in the UV region arises from the lowest 5d states of Ce3+ ion. The quantum efficiency of this emission is almost unity. The Ce4+ states in turn do not emit.
