Abstract

Highly crystalline (>90%) and porous (~20 vol.%) bio-active ceramic, ie, hydroxyapatite (HAP) coating was developed as on surgical grade SS316L substrate. This was achieved using an atmospheric plasma spraying machine modified to utilize very low (~ 1.5 kW) plasmatron power. The starting HAP powder utilized for this work was prepared in Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CGCRI) laboratory. These highly porous coatings were developed by an optimum combination of plasma spraying parameters. The phase compositions were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Various parameters related to coating microstructure, such as, coating thickness, splat size, micro-pore size, macropore size, etc were evaluated by electron microscopy and image analysis. A proper compromise between higher porosity and adequate mechanical properties, such as, bonding strength, hardness, Young’s modulus, fracture toughness and scratch resistance of the present HAP coating was also achieved.
