Abstract

The term, ‘Olivine’ is generally used to describe a group of minerals that form a solid solution series with fayalite and forsterite as the end members. It is a green or brownish green coloured mineral available throughout the world as a major constituent in maffic and ultra maffic rocks, but with varying compositions. Excellent physical, mechanical and thermal properties make this material important as slag conditioner, refractory material, foundry sand, etc and also for a number of other applications like blasting sand, ballast and covering material for under water pipes and cables, etc.
