Abstract

The effects of adding precipitated silica as a substitute for crystalline quartz to a traditional opaque ceramic glaze composition have been studied. In all the batch compositions, the particle size distribution of glaze mixes was maintained with a view to optimizing the time required for wet grinding of the glazes. Micro-structural analyses of fired glaze mixes were carried out by means of X-ray diffraction and SEM studies. Studies on gloss, whiteness, thermal expansion and crazing of glazed specimens were also carried out. It was established that, although the gradual replacement of crystalline quartz by amorphous precipitated silica increased the gloss values marginally, it decreased the maturing temperature of the glazes. Further, a marginal increase in percentage thermal expansion and a gradual decrease in the glass transformation (Tt) and softening temperatures (Ts) of the glazes were noticed as crystalline quartz was gradually replaced in the standard glaze composition by precipitated silica. This indicates a reduction in the viscosity of the glass in the said compositions.
