The increasing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly energy sources has intensified interest in biomass as an alternative to fossil fuels. This study examines the thermal degradation and combustion behavior of rice straw (RS), a lignocellulosic agricultural residue, to evaluate its suitability as a renewable source of biofuel. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was conducted under oxidative conditions at heating rates of 5, 10, and 15 °C/min. Proximate analysis indicated a high volatile matter content (68.78%) and moderate ash content (10.46%), while ultimate analysis revealed substantial carbon (45.56%) and oxygen (46.67%) contents, supporting its energetic potential. The decomposition profile showed distinct stages corresponding to hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin degradation. Kinetic modeling using iso-conversional methods—Flynn–Wall–Ozawa (FWO), Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose (KAS), Starink, and Tang—demonstrated variation in activation energy across the conversion range, with an average value of 137.12 kJ/mol, reflecting the complex multi-step reaction mechanism. Thermodynamic parameters confirmed the endothermic and non-spontaneous nature of combustion, characterized by positive enthalpy (ΔH) and Gibbs free energy (ΔG) values and a negative entropy change (ΔS), suggesting increased molecular ordering in the activated state. Overall, the results highlight the favorable thermal and combustion characteristics of rice straw, reinforcing its potential as a renewable fuel for thermochemical conversion processes. This work provides valuable insights for the design and optimization of biomass-based energy systems. Keywords: Rice Straw; Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA); Kinetics; Bioenergy
