Rice straw, a widely available agricultural byproduct, has been processed via pyrolysis to investigate its suitability for biofuel generation. The thermal degradation behavior was analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) under Ar atmosphere at varying low heating rates in between 5 – 20 °C/min. Iso-conversional model-free kinetic methods were employed to determine the activation energies across different level of conversion and the study revealed a multi-step decomposition mechanism with less activation energy requirement. Complementary to the kinetic evaluation, pyrolysis experiments with rice straw were conducted within the temperature range of 400–700 °C & the condensable and non-condensable products were characterized. The bio-oil fraction was analyzed for its physicochemical properties. Detailed analysis of the condensable liquid fraction showed moderate acidity, favorable energy content, and a complex composition dominated by phenolic, ethers, ketonic compounds etc. as revealed by GC–MS and FTIR. The solid biochar characterization included proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, High heating value, BET surface area (indicating high porosity), surface morphology (SEM), elemental mapping (EDX), and crystallinity (XRD). Non-condensable gaseous products were quantified via gas chromatography, highlighting the presence of energy-rich components. The study provides insights into the thermal degradation and product potential of rice straw, emphasizing its viability for biofuel and value-added applications. This integrated study combining kinetic modeling and detailed product characteristics offers a complete understanding of rice straw pyrolysis and underscores its potential in sustainable energy conversion and resource recovery.
