Abstract

Recent technological advancements in the iron and steel industry have intensified blast furnace operations, requiring trough linings with superior resistance to oxidation, corrosion, abrasion, and thermal shock. In this study, sol bonded Al₂O₃–SiC–C castables were developed using colloidal silica as a binder to enhance refractoriness and reduce drying time. Porous alumina aggregates were incorporated at 5% and 10% replacement levels for conventional alumina to evaluate their influence on material performance. The castables were fired at varying temperatures and characterized for physical, mechanical, and thermomechanical properties along with phase analysis. Results indicated that 5 wt% porous alumina optimized thermal shock resistance and hot strength, attributed to the formation of new high-temperature phases that improved the overall performance of the refractory material.
