Refractory materials are vital in high-temperature industries like iron & steel, cement, ceramics. Worldwide, refractory consumption is estimated at 35–40 million tons annually, while global production of spent refractories stands at around 28 million tons each year. The current practice of disposal of refractory waste as landfill material low-end applications undermines the potential of these essential materials. However, the high-value refractory phases present in the form of grains and matrix parts in the waste refractory can be reused as secondary raw materials for high-temperature applications after proper recycling. Our work addresses the recovery of valuable aggregates from spent MgO-C bricks and determine the amount of the recovered material to be used suitably in refractory manufacturing. The spent bricks were firstly characterized using chemical analysis, XRD, and carbon-sulphur analysis where coarser fractions (1–5 mm) showed higher purity with dominant periclase phases, while finer ones included forsterite, monticellite, quartz, and spinel as impurity. After processing, recycled aggregates were used to prepare MgO-C refractory blocks by gradual replacement of the fresh MgO aggregates (0 to 50wt%). The blocks after tempering and coking, were then evaluated by apparent porosity, bulk density, Cold Compressive Strength, HMOR, CMOR and thermal shock resistance. The analysis shows that replacing fresh aggregate with up to 40wt% with the recycled aggregates does not significantly affect properties.
