Abstract

Magnesite is a key raw material used to make refractory products, which are essential in industries like steel and iron due to their ability to withstand high temperatures and harsh conditions. Although India has large reserves of magnesite, much of it is of low quality, forcing the country to import large amounts of high-grade magnesite. As global demand rises and supply tightens, finding alternative sources becomes more important. This study focuses on recycling used refractory waste to recover magnesia (MgO), especially from fine powders that are usually discarded. While earlier research mainly reused large waste chunks, this study found that up to 86% of magnesia can be recovered from the fine powder using two chemical leaching methods. Lab tests, including XRD ,XRF and TGA-DTA, showed that about 90% of the magnesia in the fine powder exists as periclase, a usable form of MgO. The recovered magnesia was also examined under a microscope to confirm its quality. It has potential commercial applications, making this recovery method not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly. By turning waste into a valuable resource, this process helps reduce reliance on imports and supports sustainable practices in the refractory and steel industries.
