Abstract
A new compact wide-band hybrid optical amplifier is demonstrated using a combination of Hafnium Bismuth Erbium co-doped fiber (HB-EDF) and Zirconia-Yttria-Aluminium co-doped erbium fiber (Zr-EDF) as the gain medium. The proposed amplifier is constructed using a 1 m long HB-EDF and a 2 m long Zr-EDF in stages, in a single and a double-pass configuration, respectively. By using the right lengths of the gain fibers and a sufficient pump power, a flat gain of 17.2 dB with a gain fluctuation of less than 2.3 dB is obtained over a 55 nm bandwidth across C- and L-band wavelength regions. The noise figure is maintained below 10.6 dB within the flat gain wavelength region.
