Abstract
A method has been developed for stepwise complexometric determination of titanium and aluminium in the same solution and pH using xylenol orange as indicator. The method is based on complexation of A1 and Ti by boiling with excess EDTA at pH ââ 5.3 and then precipitation of titanium selectively from EDTA complexes o f A1 and Ti with excess of quinolin-8-ol from a homogeneous solution at 60°-70°C. The released EDTA, equivalent to titanium, is titrated first with lead nitrate solution using xylenol orange as indicator after extraction of Ti-quinolin-8-oIate with chloroform and then in the same solution EDTA is released from Al-EDTA complex on boiling with fluoride ions and the released EDTA is back titrated with lead to establish aluminium. The method has been applied to the determination of titanium and aluminium in materials like bauxite and other high titania bearing materials. The interference o f iron has been eliminated by extracting with MIBK at 6-7 M HC1. © 1984 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
