Abstract
In the present study, the surface degradation behaviour of the MgO-Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2 based glass-ceramic material was investigated. The phase composition of the glass-ceramics was identified by X-ray diffraction analysis. The microstructure of the same glass-ceramics was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Corrosion study showed that the glass in the MgO-Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2 system had better resistance to degradation in boiling water medium than that observed in boiling HCl and HNO3 solutions whereas the glass-ceramics in the same system was more resistant to these different corrosive media than the original glass. Glass-ceramics also exhibited higher degradation resistance in boiling water compared to that noted in boiling HNO3 and HCl solutions.
