Abstract
An apparently strange creeping behaviour of CuO-BaO melts along the container wall or any solid surface has been observed. The phenomenon has been studied and a mechanism, based on the Marangoni effect, appears to be the cause. It is suggested that this is due to preferential surface adsorption of barium ions. The implication of this phenomenon in the growth of single crystals of Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x superconductors has been pointed out.
