Abstract
Both amorphous and crystalline forms of barium titanyl oxalate were prepared from a mixed aqueous solution of barium chloride and titanium tetrachloride and an ethanolic solution of oxalic acid by a change in the sequence of addition. The formation of an amorphous phase is explained by taking into account the significant difference between surface tensions of water and ethanol which controls the rate of nucleation of the precipitate. The growth of nuclei is restricted by the adsorption of titanium oxychloride ions normally present in an aqueous solution of TiCl4.
