Abstract

The effect of crystallising glasses, as replacement for feldspar, on the microstructure and mechanical properties of classical porcelain has been studied. It has been found that the complete replacement of feldspar by crystallising glasses increased the fracture strength, toughness and elastic modulus of the material. The improvements are attributed to sharp changes in the microstructure as a result of a significant reduction in the content of glass phase and the appearance of a cordierite phase in its place.
