Abstract
A complete X-ray crystallographic investigation is carried out on a polycrystalline Li-stabilized beta''-alumina material containing beta-alumina in syntaxy. Beta''-alumina exhibits composition close to 1.493 Na+ per formula unit with a compensation mechanism exclusively due to Li+ substitution for Al(1) ion in the spinel block. The ionic distribution, almost-equal-to 33% at BR (Beevers-Ross) [or Na(1)] and almost-equal-to 67% at mO (mid oxygen) [or Na(2)], gives rise a local-order-type two-dimensional (2-D) (unroofed radical 2a- unroofed radical 2a) superlattice structure of the conduction plane instead of (square-root 3a- square-root 3a) superlattice given by previous works.
