Calcium aluminate Ca12Al14O33 glass, on crystallisation around 1150-degrees-C, shows IR transparency beyond 6 mum which is unusual in ceramic materials and renders it suitable for use in IR optical devices. The material retains its IR transparency even on hydration. (C) 1993 The Institute of Materials.
