A low-pressure process combining adsorption under fluidized condition and cross flow microfiltration using low cost ceramic membrane module was developed for simultaneous removal of arsenic and iron from highly contaminated ground water (up to 1.5 ppm As and 15 ppm Fe) and production of quality drinking water (<10 ppb As & <0.1ppm Fe) as per WHO recommendation. Sustainability the novel technology has been established through installation of several community model Arsenic and Iron Removal Plants (2500-5000 LPD capacity). The performance data in terms of input and output water quality, flux, cleaning & regeneration aspects of community model plants will be presented. Characterization of the sludge from the pilot plant revealed presence of hydrated iron oxide nano-particles with 3-4 at % arsenic loading. The generic process utilizing adsorption and membrane separation has also been extended to develop bench scale process for wastewater treatment.
