Abstract

In anode supported SOFC, anode substrate provides the major mechanical support. This work is devoted to establish the improvement in mechanical properties of the tapecast, laminated Ni-YSZ anode substrate. The tested configuration consists of a dense, similar to 20 mu m YSZ coating on a 1-2 mm thick porous Ni-YSZ cermet. The porosimetry data showed an increase of pore volume, uniform reduction of NiO to Ni and a very gradual shift in the unimodal pore size distribution. The bi-axial strength data of 1.5 mm Ni-YSZ anode with and without YSZ electrolyte coating were typically about 90 and 85 MPa respectively which were much higher than those reported (60 MPa) in literature. Also, Weibull modulus (15) was higher for these structures compared to those (10) reported earlier. For YSZ coating, the young's modulus data (218 GPa) measured by nano-indentation method matched well with that of dense YSZ electrolyte.
