Abstract

Creep experiments were conducted with 100—250 MPa stress at 1200-1450°C of Reaction Sintered (RS) Sialon A synthesized from Si3N4-AlN-Al203 and Liquid Phase Sintered (LPS) Sialon C, CI synthesized from Y203-A1N-Si02 systems. RS Sialon A, containing no liquid phase sintering aid, had better creep resistance than LPS Sialon C, CI. However, both types of Sialon showed creep strain rates lower than many other types of Sialon and silicon nitride reported in the literature. Sialon with better creep resistance had also better strength at elevated temperature. RS Sialon A had stress exponent (n) of 1.13 and 1.33 in the creep tests with 100-200 MPa stress at 1200—1300°C. LPS Sialon CI and C had η in the range 1.40-2.42 in the creep tests with 100-200 MPa stress at 1300-1400°C. LPS Sialon C had an activation energy (O) of 77.3-87.6 KCal/mole in the creep tests with 100-200 MPa stress at 1200-1450°C.
