Addition of some divalent and trivalent cations (0.5–2.0 wt% oxide)_as soluble salts during the preparation of tetraethyl orthosilicate-derived gels showed an increase in the specific surface areas and pore volumes. The effect was more pronounced for trivalent dopants. Specially interesting was the incorporation of Al3+ and Cr3+ which led to a bimodal distribution of pore diameter. At 650°C, there was a total loss of surface area in the case of the undoped silica gel, while the doped gels showed losses commensurate with their capacity to release volatile matter (mainly water) up to 1200°C.
