Abstract

Properties of thermal barrier coating (TBC) prepared from dispersed Y-PSZ in a high temperature resistant alumino-borosilicate glassy phase in the system, RC-R'O-SiO2-Al2O3, (R = Ca, Mg, Ba & R' = Na, K) have been studied. A coating composition by simple and cost effective vitreous enamelling technique has been applied on a stainless steel, substrate (AISI-310) and the results of characterisations, microstructures and properties of 3 wt% Y-PSZ dispersed in glassy matrix are reported in this paper. The results indicate that the thermal gradient of a TBC, having thickness of 750–800 microns, is in the range of 175°-180°C when the coated surface is exposed to a temperature of 1000°C for half an hour. But a significant improvement of the gradient, viz. 650°-675°C is observed even with a long exposure of the coated surface to a temperature of 1000°C when a cooling system made by continuous flow of compressed air is applied.
