Abstract

Optical absorption and photoluminescence characteristics for Sm3+ ions doped in the range 8.7 x 10(19) to 7.8 x 10(20) ions cm(-3) in calcium metaphosphate glasses are presented. Absorption spectra reflect the intraconfigurational 4f —> 4f transition. The spectral intensities are analysed in ter ms of the Judd-Ofelt parameters Omega(lambda) (lambda=2,4,6) and compared with the values obtained through experimental findings. The Omega(2) value is observed to be ten times higher in comparison to fluorozincate glass and almost equal to that in berate glass suggesting Sm3+ coordination with oxygen ligands. Spontaneous emission probabilities of different electronic transitions ave computed from the experimental branching ratios. The high value of electric dipole emission transition is explained on the basis of glass asymmetry and covalency. Radiative lifetime of the excited (4)G(5/2) level has also been calculated.
