Abstract

The effect of additive MgSO4 on the strength characteristics for all reaction-sintered MgO:Al2O3 was discussed. The starting oxides, MgO and Al2O3 were characterized using chemical analysis, powder x-ray diffractometry (XRD) using CuK radiation, specific gravity and specific surface area. Batch composition oxides were used and each MgSO4 composition was added at 0.5, 1 and 2 wt%. Addition of MgSO4 to stochiometric spinel shows a negative effect at 0.5 wt% on sintering at 1550°C but a higher amount of additive resulted in some improvement.
